First Aid Updates

The following information is regarding important changes to the first aid regulations and is taken from the HSE web site:

'HSE is reviewing the effectiveness of Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 - these are the regulations that govern the first aid at work qualification.

The main issues are:

Research into these areas was commissioned in October 2001

An evaluation of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 , ACop and guidance (RR 069)

The research report produced by Casella Winton, was published on 30 January 2003. The research showed provision of First Aid in the workplace had strong support from employers and workers but there was a lack of clarity and understanding in some areas.

For the 2nd stage of the review, HSE recently sought more view on the future regulation of first aid at work in the form of a discussion document (DD). the DD created a wide interest because every employer - and self employed person - has a duty to make provision for first aid in their workplace. The consultation period closed on 30 November 2003 and HSE received over 500 comments.

Following evaluation of the responses, advice and recommendations for action will be presented to the health and Safety commission Spring 2004.

A Consultation document is planned for Autumn 2004, if any changes to the regulations, ACoP and guidance are proposed.

Following the Consultation, it is likely that any changes to the Regulations/ACoP will be implemented late 2005/early 2006.'

In other words great changes may take place - such as annual refreshers and 2 day FAW courses - watch this space for up to date information!
