AED Defibrillation Training

The use of an Automated External Defibrillator

CPR 

The trainee will be able to establish a safe environment and the need for CPR on an adult.

  • Candidate will be able to identify potential sources of danger
  • Candidate will be able to identify causes of unconsciousness
  • Candidate will be able to list at least four common causes of cardiac arrest
  • Candidate will be able to describe the main signs of cardiac arrest

By the end of the session the trainee will be able to demonstrate CPR, as a lone rescuer, in a simulated incident on an appropriate resuscitation training manikin. 

The trainee must be able to perform CPR for at least two minutes.

AED

The trainee will be able to demonstrate safe and appropriate practice when using an AED in accordance with Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines.

  • Candidate will be able to describe ventricular fibrillation and its significance
  • Candidate will be able to explain defibrillation
  • Candidate will be able to explain the importance of early defibrillation
  • Candidate will be able to identify when an AED should be used
  • Candidate will be able to describe the maintenance requirements of an AED
  • Candidate will be able to describe what records should be kept

By the end of the session the trainee will be able to demonstrate the assessment of an unresponsive victim who is not breathing normally, performance of CPR, and the use of an AED. An appropriate resuscitation training manikin and a training AED should be used. Both the following situations will be simulated:

  • a victim requiring a shock

and

  • a victim not requiring a shock
